Good performance of South Asia’s container ports is a crucial for the region’s competitiveness. A new World Bank report finds that while South Asia’s ports have made improvements, there is room for continued progress as shipping still costs more and takes longer in South Asia than in some other regions. Through improving its ports, South Asia could increase its exports to create stronger economies, better jobs, and a better standard of living.

In recent years, with the eastward movement of economic, trade and shipping centers, the economic and trade development in Asia has been very rapid. The layout of world ports is basically consistent with the global economic pattern, and three major port clusters in North America, Europe and East Asia have been basically formed.
